From it's beginnings as a small 13th century manorial borough it grew via the Industrial Revolution to be a huge centre of wool production and major mill town with secondary industries in engineering, ironworking, printing and flax. Previously a small market town Leeds has grown from it's River Aire Valley centre to absorb many surrounding villages.
